## Before it goes in the dumpster

Remodels throw away the best part of an old house: the crystal knobs, the mortise locks and skeleton keys, the brass hinges, the leaded-glass transom. Ask your crew to set the old hardware aside — a coffee can of old doorknobs is worth a text. I pick up what’s already out or ready to go, free, by request, and tell you who takes the rest.

## Door, window and cabinet hardware

- **Doorknobs:** brass, bronze, cast iron, glass and crystal, porcelain (white and black), Bakelite, wood.
- **Backplates and escutcheons:** Eastlake, Victorian, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco; complete sets with spindles and rosettes.
- **Mortise locks and keys, rim and box locks, skeleton keys:** Russwin, Sargent, P. & F. Corbin, Yale & Towne, Reading, Branford, Norwalk, Lockwood.
- **Ornamental hinges:** ball-tip, steeple-tip, decorative butts, strap hinges.
- Door knockers, twist doorbells, push and kick plates, mail slots.
- Transom lifters and catches; pocket-door pulls and hardware.
- **Window hardware:** sash lifts, sash locks, sash pulleys, casement stays.
- **Cabinet hardware:** Hoosier and icebox latches, bin and cup pulls, glass cabinet knobs, label pulls.
- Barn and sliding-door track and hangers (Richards-Wilcox, Stanley).
- School and coat hooks.
- **New in the box** from a job’s leftovers: Baldwin, Emtek, Rocky Mountain Hardware, commercial locksets.

### Old or reproduction?

Turn it over. Old pieces often carry a maker’s name or patent date on the back, and a mortise lock’s faceplate is usually stamped with the maker. A photo of the back tells me more than the front.

## Doors, glass, trim and iron

- Solid-wood five-panel and Craftsman doors, doors with their original hardware, French and pocket doors, wooden screen doors.
- Carved Southwestern and Spanish Colonial–style doors, corbels and beams (photo first).
- Stained, leaded and beveled glass windows and door panels; transom windows.
- Mantels, columns, balusters, newel posts, spindles, gingerbread and fretwork.
- Pressed-tin ceiling tiles and cornice; New Mexico punched-tin mirrors and sconces.
- Iron gates, fence panels, window grilles, floor registers and heat grates, coal-chute doors.

## Heat and plumbing: heavy, so photo first

- Cast-iron radiators, especially ornate ones.
- Clawfoot tubs, pedestal and farmhouse sinks, colored mid-century bath fixtures (pink, mint, yellow).
- Brass and nickel faucets, valves, spigots, vintage shower heads.

Tell me the stairs and the way out, and I’ll say honestly if it’s something I can move.

## Mid-century house parts

Albuquerque built a lot of houses in the 1950s — Dale Bellamah began building Princess Jeanne Park in the Northeast Heights in 1954, and its original brochures listed vented range hoods and multi-room intercoms ([UNM Albuquerque Modernism](https://albuquerquemodernism.unm.edu/posts/cs20_princess_jeanne_park_albuquerque_nm.html)). From homes of that era I want: intercom masters and door chimes, copper or enamel range hoods, original light fixtures ([vintage lighting](https://abqreclaimed.com/vintage-industrial-lighting-pickup-albuquerque#home)), built-in ironing-board and medicine cabinets removed intact, and period hardware.

## Old-house renovations

Huning Highlands — platted in 1880 as Albuquerque’s first residential subdivision — is full of Victorian and early-1900s houses ([Huning Highlands Historic District](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huning_Highlands_Historic_District)), and older neighborhoods across town have their own. When one gets redone, the original hardware, doors and glass are the salvage.

## Out, or still installed?

I pick up what’s already removed or ready to go. I’m not a demolition contractor. If it’s still installed, send a photo and ask — I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s something I can take once it’s out. Anything wired or plumbed in needs an electrician or plumber to disconnect it first. Selling the house? Ask your agent before anything attached leaves — the purchase contract decides what conveys.

## What to photograph

1. The front and the back of one piece.
2. A count — twelve matching knobs is a different text from one.
3. The whole door with its hardware on it.
4. A close-up of any glass, so I can see cracks.
5. A rough size.
6. Whether it’s out or still installed.

## What I don’t take

- Builder-grade and hollow-core doors, vinyl and aluminum windows, standard kitchen cabinets and ordinary fixtures. - Drywall, lumber, tile and debris — that’s a paid hauler.
- Anything I’d have to tear out myself.

## When salvage turns up

- **A remodel.** Tell the crew to set the old pieces aside. Contractors: new-in-box leftovers are welcome — photo the boxes.
- **An old-house renovation.** The original hardware, doors and glass come out before the new goes in.

## Common questions

### Who picks up old doorknobs and door hardware in Albuquerque?

I do, free, by photo request — glass, crystal, porcelain and brass knobs, backplates, mortise locks and skeleton keys, hinges, sash and cabinet hardware, from one coffee can to a whole house’s worth. I don’t pay cash. Modern builder-grade hardware isn’t mine; Habitat ReStore takes building materials in good shape (call to confirm).

### Will you take out the doors or fixtures for me?

No — I’m not a demolition contractor. I pick up what’s already out or ready to go. If it’s still installed, send a photo and ask; anything wired or plumbed in needs an electrician or plumber to disconnect it first.

### Can you move a clawfoot tub or a cast-iron radiator?

Photo first. Tell me where it sits and the way out — stairs, door widths, the distance to the driveway — and I’ll say honestly whether it’s something I can move.

### Isn’t old brass hardware just scrap?

Often it’s worth more whole: a matched set of old knobs or a maker-stamped mortise lock goes to someone restoring an old house. Send a photo before anything goes in a scrap bin. Plain brass and copper scrap goes through my free copper and wire pickup.

### I’m a contractor with new-in-box hardware and fixtures — do you take those?

Yes, the premium pieces — Baldwin, Emtek, Rocky Mountain Hardware, commercial locksets, new-in-box light fixtures. Photo the boxes and give me a count. Ordinary leftover building materials go to Habitat ReStore.

### What about ordinary old windows and doors?

Not mine — builder-grade and hollow-core doors, vinyl and aluminum windows and standard cabinets go to Habitat ReStore if they’re in good shape (call to confirm). Solid-wood, Craftsman, stained-glass and carved doors are the ones worth a photo.

### Do you pay, and is it tax-deductible?

No and no. Abq Reclaimed is for-profit: the pickup is free, I don’t pay cash, and it isn’t tax-deductible. You get a Reclaim Receipt saying where things went, not a tax receipt.

### I’m on a deadline — closing day, or a crew coming Monday. Can you make it?

Tell me the date in the first text. There’s no fixed turnaround; I’ll say honestly whether I can make it before anything is promised.
