How to prepare your clothes for a pickup

Five minutes of prep makes pickup day effortless — and makes sure every item that can be reused or recycled actually is. Here's the whole routine, plus a checklist you can print.

A donation pickup is about as easy as decluttering gets: you bag it, leave it out, and it's gone. A little prep just makes it smoother — nothing gets rained on, nothing gets lost, and we can grab everything in one trip. Here's how to get ready.

The 5-minute routine

  1. Gather everything you're letting go. Clothing, shoes, linens — wearable and worn-out. We sort the reusable from the recyclable, so you don't have to pre-judge anything. (Unsure on an item? Use the sorter.)
  2. Bag it and keep it dry. Sturdy trash bags or boxes are perfect. Tie or close them so nothing gets wet — dry textiles can be reused and recycled; wet ones often can't.
  3. Pair and protect. Tie shoes together, bundle belts, and keep small accessories in a knotted grocery bag so they don't scatter.
  4. Set it out. Put the bags wherever we agreed — porch, front step, or driveway — by the morning of your pickup day. No need to be home.
  5. Leave a note if needed. Gate code, friendly dog, "bags are behind the blue pot" — drop any details in your pickup request so we find everything.

You do not need to wash, fold, or sort by quality. Clean and dry is plenty. The whole point of a pickup is that it's easy — leave the sorting to us.

A few common questions

What if it rains? Tuck bags under an eave, in a covered porch, or in a bin — anywhere they'll stay dry. Wet fabric is the main thing that turns reusable clothes into trash.

How much can I leave out? Anything from a single bag to a whole-closet clean-out. If it's a big load (a move or estate clean-out), mention the volume in your request so we bring the right vehicle.

Do I need to be home? Nope. Just have the bags out and accessible, and we'll take it from there.
