As the season turns, the coats piling up in your closet could be keeping someone warm instead. Here is a quick guide to donating winter coats in Albuquerque — and the easiest way to do it.

What makes a great coat donation

Clean, functional coats with working zippers and no major damage are ideal — puffers, wool coats, parkas, fleece, and kids' snow gear are all in high demand when temperatures drop. Add gloves, hats, and scarves to round out the warmth.

What about worn-out coats?

Do not trash them. A coat that is past wearing can still be recycled as textile material. Bag it with the rest — a pickup that sorts and recycles will handle it, so we keep as much as possible from going to waste.

Timing matters

Coats are most needed right as the cold arrives, so the best time to donate is early in the season. Do the closet swap, pull what you did not wear last winter, and move it along while it can do the most good.
