How-to

How often should you declutter your closet?

Not as often as the internet says — but more deliberately. Here is a realistic rhythm.

There is no universal rule, but there is a rhythm that keeps a closet from quietly overflowing without turning decluttering into a chore. Here is a realistic schedule, plus the one habit that does most of the work.

Twice a year: the seasonal swap

The natural time to edit your closet is when you change it over for the season. As you pull out warm-weather clothes and pack away winter layers, you are already handling everything — so decide as you go. Two real clean-outs a year is plenty for most people. (See our spring and post-holiday guides.)

Year-round: one in, one out

The habit that prevents the big overwhelming purge is simple: every time something new comes in, send an older item out. It keeps your closet at a steady size with zero effort and almost no decisions.

Life events: move it all

Moving, a new baby, a job change, or a body change are all natural reset points. Don't pack or store clothes you will not wear — declutter first.

The part everyone skips

Whatever your rhythm, the clean-out only counts when the bags actually leave. Close the loop the same day: book a free pickup and set them out. We take any condition, so the whole pile goes at once.
