What sells: the labels and pieces I look for

I'm a reseller (eBay since 2003), so the question is simple: will someone go looking for this? For quality clothing and shoes in good, resellable condition, the answer is often yes. Send me a photo of any of this:

• Brand-name & designer labels — well-known brands and designer pieces in good shape: coats, jackets, knitwear, denim, dresses, bags
• Boots & leather shoes — cowboy boots, work boots, Red Wing, Danner, Frye and Lucchese-type boots, quality leather hiking boots, good leather dress shoes; plus brand-name athletic shoes in good shape
• Outdoor & technical apparel — Patagonia, Arc'teryx, The North Face, Burton, KUHL: shells, fleece, down, ski and snowboard wear, hiking and climbing clothing
• Workwear — Carhartt, Filson and other heavy-duty jackets, vests, bibs and pants
• Western & vintage — pearl-snap and brushpopper shirts, vintage denim, band and concert tees, old team jackets, jerseys and caps
• Vintage wool blankets — Pendleton-style, Hudson's Bay and Faribault-type camp blankets (vintage wool, not ordinary blankets)

These are the kinds of pieces I've actually sold: a Relwen jacket, a Stormy Kromer vest, vintage Patagonia fleece, leather hikers, a vintage wool camp blanket. A few real things I've rehomed:

How to photograph it (it takes a minute)

1. The labels. The brand tag and the size tag — for boots, the inside of the shaft or tongue. The label tells me most of what I need to know.
2. The soles. Flip shoes and boots over. Heels and toes show me how much life is left.
3. Any wear spots. Cuffs, collars, elbows, knees, zippers — and say so up front if there's a stain, a hole or a smell.
4. A wide shot. If it's a closet or a pile, one photo of the whole thing helps me see what's there.

What I don't take

• Worn-out, stained, torn or smelly clothes or shoes
• Underwear and socks
• Generic everyday basics
• Linens, sheets, towels, pet bedding and ordinary blankets
• Rags — and I don't do textile recycling of any kind

Where the good stuff hides: the closets

When people clear out, the closets are often an afterthought — and they shouldn't be. The hall closet and the back of a bedroom closet in a parent's house, or the coats nobody is packing for a move, are where the best boots, wool coats, workwear and vintage pieces tend to be. If you're moving, downsizing, clearing out a parent's house, handling a loved one's home or dealing with estate-sale leftovers, send the closets along with the garage: the good clothing rides with the tools, gear and electronics in one trip.
