After the estate sale: free pickup for what didn't sell

Why leftovers are my sweet spot

Estate-sale shoppers want bargains on a weekend; I sell to the specific buyer on the internet who's searching for that exact drill, receiver, camera, or sewing machine. So the leftover pile a sale company calls "clean-out" is often full of things with a real second life. That's why I take it free.

What do estate sale companies do with unsold items?

It depends on your contract. Some companies offer a clean-out for a fee, some donate what's left, some haul it, and some leave it for the family — so ask before you sign. The tools, electronics, gear and collectibles in the leftover pile are worth a photo to me first: I take that share free, by request, and the paid clean-out gets smaller.

Before you sign with an estate sale company: five questions

1. How are you paid: a share of sales, a minimum, or both?
2. What happens to what doesn't sell, and is a clean-out included or extra?
3. Can the family pull items first, and can a free resale pickup come before your clean-out crew?
4. Do you sell the garage and workshop, or only the house?
5. When do we get the proceeds and a list of what sold?

Get the answers in writing. I’m not an estate sale company and I don’t run sales — I’m the free first pass for what’s left.

Estate sale, or skip the sale?

Skip the sale when most of the value is in the garage, workshop, electronics and gear, or when the calendar won't allow one. Sell the few valuable pieces yourself (where to sell in Albuquerque), let a charity pick up everyday furniture in good shape, use the City's Large Item Pick-Up (311) for bulky leftovers, and text me photos of the resale-worthy middle.

Garage and moving sale leftovers

Same idea, smaller pile. When the sign comes down, text me photos of the tools, electronics (working or not), camping gear, bikes, sporting goods, instruments and collectibles that didn’t sell — that share only. Everyday clothes and housewares go to a charity drop-off or Big Brothers Big Sisters home pickup ((505) 881-0599 — call to confirm); bulky leftovers to the City’s Large Item Pick-Up (311).

What I take from a sale's leftovers

• Tools, hardware, garage and workshop contents
• Electronics, audio, cameras, computers, games — working or not
• Records, books (those go to a local book donation drop box), collectibles, toys, memorabilia
• Camping and sporting gear, bikes, instruments
• Small appliances and quality kitchen gear; the vintage and quality furniture that didn’t sell (photo any maker’s mark); large appliances by request
• Home-health equipment parts — power-chair controllers and wheelchair parts, adjustable-bed motors, control boxes and remotes, lift-chair motors, working or not (parts, not medical supplies; a whole chair or bed: send a photo first — no promise. From hospice or rented? The supplier’s sticker tells you who to call — ask whether it’s yours now)
• Shop, service and aviation manuals, and technical instruments — microscopes, slide rules, drafting and test gear
• Quality clothing and shoes — brand-name outdoor apparel (Patagonia, Burton, KUHL, Stormy Kromer), designer labels, workwear, vintage and western, good leather boots, vintage wool camp blankets (a photo of the labels and soles tells me); scrap metal

How a clear-out works with me

1. Send photos — wide shots of every room, garage, and closet. Don't sort first — but open the closets: good boots, coats and labels are worth a photo (quality clothing & shoes). I read every request personally.
2. I reply honestly: what I can take free (the resale-worthy share), what a charity or the city will take, and what needs a paid hauler. You get a plan, not just a truck.
3. Pickup by request, around my routes. I'm one person with a trailer and a forklift; I'll tell you what's realistic for your date rather than overpromise. Drop-off by text is the surest option for smaller loads.
4. Afterward, a Reclaim Receipt: a note telling you where the things actually went.
