Sewing machines I pick up free

Name-brand and vintage machines have buyers, running or not — sewists, quilters and people restoring the same model all go looking for them. Send a photo of any of this:

• Vintage & antique: Singer Featherweights (221, 222), 301s, 401As, 500s, 15s and 201s, treadles and hand-cranks; Bernina Records; Pfaff 130s and 260s; Viking, Necchi, Elna, Kenmore and White metal machines.
• Modern: Bernina, Pfaff, Janome, Juki, Baby Lock, Husqvarna Viking; computerized and embroidery machines with their hoops, cards and software.
• Sergers and coverstitch machines — with their manuals and tweezers, if they’re around.
• Industrial: Juki, Consew, Singer and Pfaff industrials; walking-foot upholstery machines and blind-stitchers on their tables (heavy — photo first).
• Quilting: long-arm and mid-arm machines and frames; rulers and templates in quantity.
• Knitting, spinning & weaving: knitting machines (Brother, Silver Reed/Studio, Passap); spinning wheels (Ashford, Schacht, Louet, Kromski); table and floor looms, warping boards, swifts and ball winders.
• Feet, attachments & parts: presser feet, buttonholers and rufflers in their boxes, bobbin cases, foot controls, motors, belts, manuals.
• Cabinets, cases & dress forms: maker-marked sewing cabinets, treadle bases, carrying cases, adjustable and vintage dress forms — more on vintage furniture pickup.
• Patterns & notions: vintage patterns, buttons by the jar, wooden spools, old tins and needle books.

I’ll usually pass on

• Cheap plastic machines that don’t run.
• Cracked castings, and rusted-solid or water-damaged machines.
• Particleboard sewing tables.
• Anything with pests or smoke damage.
• Fabric, scraps, remnants, yarn odds and ends, linens and everyday clothing — a charity drop-off is the right place for those, and I don’t do textile recycling. Quality clothing and shoes are a yes: quality clothing & shoes pickup.

What to photograph

1. The model badge, on the front or the arm.
2. The serial number on the bed.
3. The whole machine in its case or cabinet.
4. The foot control and cord.
5. The accessory box, opened.
6. For industrial, long-arm and loom pieces, the route out: stairs, doorways and where a trailer could park.
7. Does it run? Tell me what it does — sews, jams, hums, nothing.

The whole sewing room — and a deadline

Sewing rooms come up all at once: a move, a house going on the market, a parent heading to assisted living, an alterations or upholstery shop closing. Nobody clearing a house has time to price six machines, a cabinet and forty years of notions. Need it out of the way? Text a photo — I come get the good stuff and tell you who takes the rest. Tell me your deadline and I’ll say honestly whether I can make it.

Before anything goes to a drop-off, open the cabinet drawers and check the closet shelf: attachment boxes, feet, bobbins and manuals hide there, and they’re often the one piece someone is searching for.

Heavy pieces — an industrial table, a long-arm frame, a floor loom, a treadle cabinet: tell me stairs and access; I’ll say honestly whether it’s something I can move. Frames and looms usually come apart, so say whether you still have the manual.

The city of Albuquerque is my usual area. Rio Rancho, Corrales, Los Ranchos, Tijeras and the East Mountains are case by case, and Bernalillo, Placitas, Algodones, Los Lunas, Bosque Farms, Peralta, Belen and Edgewood are usually out of range — text a photo with your ZIP.

Where it goes

I identify each machine, check what runs and list it where sewists, quilters and restorers look. Running machines go to people who’ll sew on them; parts machines go to people keeping the same model alive; feet, cases and manuals go to whoever is missing that one piece. Afterward you get a Reclaim Receipt saying where things went. Typewriters and other old machines: vintage & collectibles.
